A Maine Winter

Skiing adventures in the snow

If you’re looking for even more activities, The Lodge is just 30 minutes from a fantastic skiing experience at Shawnee Peak, the longest operating ski resort in Maine. They have over 40 trails, making it a place for everyone, no matter their level of experience. In addition to great skiing, Shawnee Peak offers lessons and equipment rentals (which they encourage that you reserve online before arrival). If you’d rather cross-country ski, check out Pineland Farms, which is also only 30 minutes from The Lodge. Not only can you cross-country ski there, but there are over 5,000 acres of woodlands and fields with trails for biking, running, hiking, and snowshoeing.

Ice-covered lake with trees on the shore

A bit further from Casco, about an hour’s drive southeast, is Old Orchard Beach. A beach may not sound like somewhere you want to go in the winter, but if you dress warmly, you are sure to enjoy the scenery year-round. Don’t forget binoculars, as birdwatching is a popular wintertime activity in Maine. You may spot ducks bobbing in and out of the water, sandpipers skimming over the surface, or loons sporting their mellow winter colors. If you are hunting for a different type of winter fun, Maine’s many lakes offer amazing opportunities for ice-fishing. Spending time on a frozen lake with friends and family is one of the best ways to bond and catch something tasty for dinner! If you’re lucky you might catch some delicious land-locked salmon and trout.

The holidays may have just ended, but it’s never too soon to start planning your next Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years for the best winter in Maine!
